With a Thompson River University based club, PCMA-TRU (also known as Professional Convention Management Association – TRU Chapter), I learned so much about the events and conventions industry in North America. My voluntary time spent here as a member, secretary, and interim president was beyond exceptional. I really enjoyed mentoring other students, being exposed to new ideas, and travelling for the sake of learning.

In January 2015, our chapter raised funds to travel to Chicago, Illinois for the annual Professional Convention Management Association’s Convening Leaders Conference. This was such an amazing trip, as I was able to learn so much, network with amazing professionals and experience a new city.

I volunteered with countless events during my time with PCMA-TRU, including The Moustache Movement, the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association’s Wellness Conference, the Back To School BBQ, the Celebrate F.A.C.T Ball, On Wednesdays We Wear Pink, Mosaic Fashion Show, and many, many more. I also developed a fundraising program to design and sell limited edition faculty sweaters to students and professors.

Besides on site event assistance, I aided in administrative duties, such as creating documents, website building, sending out meeting minutes, membership and recruitment tasks, and developing a marketing plan for the club. I think it is so important for students to branch out from their everyday studies and learn as much as possible with real world experience – and participating in clubs, is just the way to do it!
