The Power of Being A Girl conference is an annual event hosted by the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA. The conference responds to local community needs and relies on girls’ leadership in its planning and organization with workshops focusing on a variety of issues including self-esteem, healthy relationships, dating, discrimination, body image, sexual health, bullying, and internet safety, among others.
In 2014, I assisted with this event as the Arts Activity Coordinator. My duties were to recruit and orientate local artists and businesses for the lunch time recreational activities. I coordinated face painters, a henna artist, and other local artists to offer different activities for the guests (aged 9 to 14 years old).
In past years, I have taught workshops with this conference. For example, in 2013, I taught a workshop on the power of words. In each session, we brainstormed words that meant something to each of us and decorated pillow cases with tye dye and affirmations.
