I have been involved with the Kamloops Arts Council for over five years. I began volunteering with events, and quickly moved up the ladder by helping out as a Board Director and Vice President. I was also hired as an Events and Administrative Assistant where I aided with various festivals and events, such as the well known Art in the Park on Canada Day. For about two years, I held the position as the Galleries Coordinator, where I managed two public art galleries for local, emerging artists as well as pop up exhibitions.
My favourite part about working with the Kamloops Arts Council in any capacity, has been having the ability to create social change and to allow the arts in our community to be accessible for all. It is amazing to hear about an artist’s excitement as he or she hangs a solo art exhibition. And talk about the happiness of winning an award at the annual Art Exposed exhibition, I can only imagine the jitters one would have.
The Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) is a registered charitable organization that is devoted to the development and enhancement of the arts in the Kamloops area. Now in their 47th year (founded 1968), they support all artists and art organizations and promote cooperation among them, government and business. They provide local artists and arts groups – visual artists, musicians, dancers and actors – with opportunities for exposure, networking and professional development.
Lorel Sternig, Events and Programs Manager, was a pleasure to work with among others at the KAC. A local artist, Wendy Weseen, also had some kind words about her interactions with the Kamloops Arts Council’s Main Gallery.
